Isaac da Costa and his cousin Abraham Capadose were both of Jewish origin. They both came to know the Lord Jesus Christ as their Messiah. Isaac da Costa was born in Amsterdam in 1798.
Da Costa became well-known not only because of his poetry, but also because of his Bible lectures. They were preserved by the notes of Johan Frederik Schimsheimer, who attended the Bible lectures with his blind wife. Each Lord’s Day evening, interested people were welcome at his house at Rozengracht. Much could be said about the content of Da Costa’s Bible lectures. Many of his thoughts from the Bible lectures can be found in this devotional journal.
